Walking

W

hether you’re looking for a gentle stroll or a tough hike, Graiguenamanagh is a perfect base or stopover for anyone who loves walking.

Situated 100m from both the Barrow Way and South Leinster Way, Killvarra is the ideal spot for weary hikers looking to take the weight off their feet, rest for the night and fuel-up for another glorious day on the trail.

The strenuous 19km Brandon Hill Loop rises from the riverside, taking-in in the forests along the side of Brandon and climbing to the 515m summit topped by a cross and a mysterious ancient cairn. The views from the hill are spectacular, from the Wicklow Mountains, down along the ridge of the Blackstairs to the Barrow, Graiguenamanagh below and the sea off County Wexford. In the other direction, you can see the Comeraghs, catch glimpses of the Knockmealdowns and even, on a clear day, the Galtees, the Silvermines Hills and the Slieve Blooms.

For those searching for something a bit gentler, a wander up or down the River Barrow towpath is a relaxing way to spend a few hours. You’ll have the chance to glimpse fish, herons, butterflies and birds of prey along the riverbank as you stroll beneath native hazel and oak trees upriver towards Clashganny or down towards St. Mullins. Silaire Wood, the last of Duiske Abbey’s remaining oak woods is a haven of tranquillity just a couple of minutes’ walk from Killvarra.

Why not take along your camera or easel when you’re out and about? Graiguenamanagh and its surroundings are incredibly photogenic and beloved by painters and photographers alike. It’s nearly impossible to take a bad photo around here! The way the light moves between the river and the buildings and down the quiet streets is just magical.
